FilM: MAYNILA. SA MGA KUKO NG LIWANAG (Manila in the Claws of Light, Philippinen 1975. R: Lino Brocka)
About
No Filipino director of the last century achieved more international recognition comparable to that of Lino Brocka (1939–1991). One of his best-known films is MAYNILA. It tells the story of Julio, a young fisherman from the provinces who comes to Manila to look for his girlfriend. To survive, he takes a job as a construction worker. Shot on location and structured episodically, the film conveys an accurate picture of the lives of the poor in the big city, of exploitation and corruption. An important subtext of the film is prostitution – both of women and men.
