APEL is the Portuguese Publishers and Booksellers Association, a national non-profit organization of public utility, established in 1927.
APEL represents, manages, promotes, and defends the general interests of the Portuguese publishing and bookselling sectors, both at a national and international level.
Promoting reading, defending fixed price for books and author and publisher’s rights are among the highest priorities of this association.
Since 1931, APEL organizes Lisbon Book Fair and supports the organisation of Book Fairs throughout the country. It also organizes and manages the Portuguese collective stand in international book events.
APEL strives to inform people in general and its members in particular about all cultural, trade, education and economic publishing and bookselling related matters.
We’ve been operating the National ISBN Agency, since 1988. Throughout the years has become a reference service in Portugal, serving the purposes of national publishers and cooperating, on a regular basis with Portuguese Language African Countries and East Timor.
APEL is an active member of the International Publisher Association (IPA), of the European Booksellers Federation (EIBF), of the Federation of European Publishers (FEP), Grupo Iberoamericano de Editores (GIE), Thema and CERLALC.
