Tara Books publishes illustrated books for children and adults. We work with Indian indigenous and folk artists, illustrators and designers from across the world, and with authors from India and elsewhere. Known for our richly visual content, our list comprises picture books for all ages, graphic narratives, titles in art and art education. We have a special line of books which are produced in our bookcraft workshop, using a range of printing processes: silkscreen printing by hand, letterpress and risography. We continue to experiment with the form of the book, as we seek to match form and content, to further enhance meaning. Design is integral to our publishing and we see the designer as adding her own to a book's content.
Our children's books combine art and text to expand ways of reading and seeing through unusual illustrations, typography, artful design, and content that ranges from nonsense verse to environmental fables, and folk tales to feminist narratives. While reflecting Indian realities, these books speak to a wide audience as well, and have been translated into many languages. Our illustrated picture books for adults feature art history, culture, politics, and artisanal worlds, from India and elsewhere. Combining art, photography and communication design, these titles bring a unique perspective to the global conversation on art, politics, history and society. The books created in our bookcraft workshop have been valued as important additions to the worldwide culture of ‘fine’ books – and praised for their artisanship and beauty.
We are recipients of over 80 international awards, including the 'Bologna Ragazzi award' for the 'Best Children’s Publisher in Asia' and the 'London Book Fair International Book Industry Excellence Award'.
