Pustaka Nasional Pte Ltd Singapore has been publishing books in Malay, Arabic and English since the 1960s. Its publications include genre-spanning fiction, textbooks, Islamic and academic books. Its writers include winners of literary prizes, recipients of the Singapore Cultural Medallion and luminaries of the Malay literary world from the 1960s onwards.
While the focus of PN's literary works between 1960s-80s was on the upheavals in Singapore due to WWII, the British Occupation and its journey into nationhood with issues such as survival, loss, displacement, and development, novels from 2000 till date bring forth the concerns of modernisation, marginalisation, family cohesion, materialism and social divide.
In recent years, PN has increased its range of books for preschoolers up to teenagers with picture books and Middle Grade novels that include fantasy, contemporary reality and historical fiction, with Asian representation.
PN continues to publish insightful, relatable and entertaining stories in Malay that engage readers' hearts and mind, and interest them to enter a journey of discovery, learning and connection to the larger world and all that is positive.
